What the filing needs to describe
The bill of entry is prepared from the real transaction and goods. The importer and broker need a consistent commercial invoice, transport record and product description, plus relevant supporting documents. Item-level detail may matter: a mixed shipment should not be reduced to an unhelpful summary.
- Importer and supplier details
- Goods description, quantity and classification basis
- Commercial value and relevant valuation information
- Origin and preferential claim, if any
- Applicable licences, certificates and customs procedure
What happens after filing
The electronic entry may be assessed, queried or selected for examination under the applicable process. Supporting documents are supplied through the authorised channel, including e-Sanchit where relevant. Duty payment and authority instructions lead toward Out of Charge when requirements are met. The exact sequence can vary; a filed entry is not itself a release order.
What a broker can and cannot decide
A customs broker can prepare and submit information on the importer’s instructions, identify gaps and respond to queries within its scope. The importer remains responsible for accurate underlying facts and authorisations. Customs makes the assessment and release decisions. If a description, origin or value is uncertain, resolve it before asking the team to file a guess.
The practical pre-arrival step
Send the invoice, packing or quantity record, bill of lading, product specifications and ETA before arrival. Ask what is still missing for this commodity and port. A short exception list is more useful than a generic statement that the paperwork is “complete”.
Questions importers ask
Is a Bill of Entry the same as a delivery order?
No. The customs declaration and carrier or terminal delivery arrangements are distinct.
Can an entry be filed before arrival?
ICEGATE describes advance filing in relevant circumstances; confirm the current rule and required information for the consignment.
