Assessment and examination answer different questions
Assessment considers the declaration and applicable duty or other requirements. Examination may check the physical goods, quantity, description or other matters directed by Customs. Some consignments may be examined before final assessment; others may proceed without physical examination under the applicable instructions. Do not promise a particular route in advance.
Make the goods identifiable
Keep the invoice, packing list, product specification and bill of lading consistent. For a mixed container, a package-level map and clear model or batch identifiers help the team locate the items described in the entry. For liquid cargo, agree how sampling or measurement interfaces would be handled with the relevant facility and authority if directed.
- Accessible package or batch identification
- Technical data matching the declared product
- Relevant licences or certificates
- Terminal or CFS contact and handling arrangements
- A person who can answer product questions promptly
Coordinate the physical interface
Customs directs the examination. Terminal, CFS or storage operators control the facility and handling equipment. The broker coordinates communication and required documentation within the agreed scope. Extra movement, opening, sampling or testing may have separate time and cost implications; confirm them with the responsible parties.
After the check
The authority may accept the declaration, ask for information or take another action under the applicable law. Keep the actual examination findings and subsequent instructions with the file. Out of Charge and physical delivery remain separate milestones.
Questions importers ask
Are all imports physically examined?
No. The applicable Customs instructions determine whether and how a consignment is examined.
Can the broker guarantee an examination result?
No. Motumal can coordinate the process, while Customs and other competent authorities decide the outcome.
